Under14's v Hampshire Dunwood GC 22 May 2010

Dorset  3½ - Hampshire  6½

The match was played at Dunwood Manor GC on a brilliantly sunny day with scarcely a breeze. As the club could not accommodate us all day we played ten singles matches in fours - not the best of formats. In a supposedly handicap order George Long led off against a local player who was in really top form. George was three over when he lost 6&5! Three up at the halfway stage Billy-Joe hung on to close out his man 3&2.

Harry Rickman was a touch disappointing as he was four down at the turn and succumbed 5&4. He can play much better. Ollie Stocks had a remarkable match being 3 down at the turn, then winning a string of six holes to turn his match round with an excellent 3&2 win. Jack fairhall was two down at the turn then played a very good back nine standing one up at the 18th. Sadly he drove OOB and so finished with a creditable half. Our run of good play - or fortune - continued with Spencer Rumble producing a 2&1 win having led three up at the turn.

We then went out with four losses: Noel Campbell-Hunter 5&3; Harry Hill 6&5 - though he was in some discomfort for much of the match; George Davis, just one down at the turn could not stem the tide of good play and lost 5&4 as did Alex Stocks in his first match for the county. Alex, too, was just a couple down at the turn.

We were well looked after by Bruce Willard and treated to a very good lasagne and a unique bread & butter pudding a la Parisienne. Well - the organisers enjoyed it but the boys' tastes did not seem to run to such exotic fare. A grand day but, unfortunately, another loss. Well done the boys - there is more to come I'm sure. My especial thanks go to the ever supportive parents and to Andy Parsons.

Under14's v Cornwall Yeovil GC 02 May 2010 (Jack Roberts Memorial League)

Dorset  3 ½ - Cornwall  5 ½

Yeovil greeted us with threats of rain and a cold northerly wind. The clubhouse changing rooms were being renovated so there were no showers and two outside loos. The match was played in parallel with an Under 16s friendly with the Under 14s teeing off first. The Newton 9 hole course was the scene for the foursomes with the odd member's group interleaving. The Newton proved to be quite a test with many very tricky tee shots and a daunting second too for the 7th hole. The highlight was a win for Harry Willsher and Jack Fairhall, Harry chipping in to win the last. A half and a loss by one hole were the other results.

After a warming lunch of hot soup, rolls and sandwiches the boys launched forth for the singles played off the stick and in strict handicap order. George Long and Billy-Joe led ff in style both winning their matches though not without the odd hitch. Harry Hall was in form against Harry Rickman and Olie Stocks faired equally poorly against Sam Church. So, with everything depending on the last two, attention was focused upon Harry Willsher and Jack Fairhall. Harry succumbed 5&3 and Jack, though trying very hard, coukl not repeat his morning's victory and fell finally 2&1, but only after recovering from being four down to get to level! Great stuff!

The final scoreline of 3 ½ :5 ½ looks worse than it should as a swing of just one match would have resulted in a draw. I am pleased to say that this time all pairs were focused upon winning. They all tried hard in the afternoon, but for one or two, the course was a tad too hard a test in the cold windy weather. This was the first counting match for the Jack Roberts trophy and there is still all to play for.

The day was finished of with an excellent after-match meal with appropriately short speeches by the opposing captains.

Our next Under 14s match is against Hampshire on 22nd May at Dunwood Manor GC.

Under 14's v Wiltshire Hamptworth GC 16 April 2010

Dorset 4 - Wiltshire 8

On a cool blustery day we found Hamptworth in pretty fair condition, soft receptive greens and reasonable fairways that showed little sign of the past heavy rain earlier in the month. The greens were fairly quick and overall posed some difficulty to the Dorset team especially as neither side had a particular advantage in terms of knowledge of the course.
