Results - 2009 - County Stroke Play Championship

Parkstone GC Sunday 02 August 2009

d_cook_1On a bright and sunny morning and with a splendid course presented by Parkstone in David Cooktheir Centenary the 2009 Stroke play Championship got under way.  Ben Churchill led the way after missing out on defending his title this year he was hoping to recapture the trophy but local Lee Booth was out to spoil the party coming home with a 68 two clear of Ben on 70.  County Champion and Parkstone member David Cook was out for the double and had a tremendous 65 to set the standard for all to beat. Last years champion Like Joy had a level par 72 and it was nice to see Tony Lawrence contending after his injured hand coming in with a fine 71 along with Kevin Robinson from Yeovil.  The late starters of Jordan Howlett and Oliver Courtney both with 74’s net 68’s were going to push hard to ensure David did not do a clean sweep.  One thing that was certain from the morning scores David Cook had blown away all comers in this years County Order of Merit securing the trophy before the second round of the stroke play.

First round gross scores

So the second round got under way with all chasing David Cook.  Lee Booth let slip his possible grip on the trophy with a 4 over 76 but Ben Churchill was fighting hard  with a  four under outward nine he then bogeyed 13 and with birdies at 16 and 17 he was back in contention until a double on the last and a 36 hole total of 139 put him in as club house leader for a short while.  David was playing very steady golf out in level par and a birdie on the tenth and thirteenth looked to seal victory even with a dropped shot on the last to come home with 72 and a 136 total.  Matt Walker had a better afternoon with a 71 and Luke Joy had another level par round to leave him back in fourth tied with Matt and Lee Booth.  Tony Lawrence also had a level par round to take third place on 143.  David was also at this time winning the Handicap cup but the young guns at the back had other ideas Jordan came home in 75 giving him a 149 gross 137 net total to push David into second place then the last group in saw Oliver Courtney come home with a 75 giving him a 149 and the Weymouth Jubilee Cup with a gross 137 net total.  It went to count back and Oliver just pipped it on the last 6 making him the handicap champion and receiving the Weymouth Cup.

Second round gross scores

weymouth_cup_winnerSo all that was left was to decide who the 72 hole champions was going to be for the Donald Holmes Championship Cup and it took no effort to work out with David Cook holding the Garrett Salver and now the Parkstone Cup totalling 273 was some seventeen shots clear of his nearest rival Ben Churchill on 290.  It has been a fantastic year for David Cook and he is to be congratulated on his out standing play and we wish him every success when he goes to Woodhall Spa to see if he can become the first from Dorset to lift the Champion of Champions Trophy.
