Junior Age Group Championships2011 Age Group winners

Lyme Regis GC 16 August 2011

On a misty and overcast morning the 2011 Age Group Championship got under way at a very nicely presented Lyme Regis GC and our sincere thanks go to the club who stepped in to take the fixture after the sad closure of Chedington Court.

There were a total of 49 young golfers from around the County each competing to become his Age Group Champion, the early starters had the worst of the mist and to be fair the sun came shining through in the afternoon to lift everyone’s spirits.  Our thanks go to the ever impressive starters in that of our President of Juniors Ian Clark and County President Doug Pratt who ensured all the boys got off to a good start.

The Under 16 Scratch championship is part of the main Boys Championship so we had four boys contesting this years handicap trophy and early starter Joe Lovery who had 74 net 70 was the early leader and maintained the lead throughout becoming this years Under 16 Handicap Champion, new comer to the County scene was Tom Arnold-Jones from Ashley Wood who took the runner up spot with a net 76.

The Under 15’s was strongly contested and the Scratch Winner was Ben Oliver Sherborne on 77 one shot less than the very disappointed Oliver Stocks from Canford both I am sure will feature heavily in Junior golf over the next few years.  The handicap side was contested strongly with Joel Sandford Broadstone net 69 taking second place to Connor Aitken Weymouth who had a net 67 again both players’ handicaps are tumbling so we look forward to seeing more from them in the future.

The Under 14’s again strongly contested and saw local lad George Seed with 79 just hold of the challenge from last years under 13 Champion and local lad David Lyon 82.  The handicap saw young Logan Davis a very keen youngster from Broadstone just gets pipped on count back by Tyler Lennox-Gordon Bridport both players having a net 70.

The under 13 championship went to Alex Dytham Canford 80, from George Carroll DG&CC 85 both again will feature in the County over the coming years. The Handicap trophy was contested between to Weymouth lads with Sean Dimmick who was floored the day before when his ball rebounded of a wall and hit him in the face having a net 71 to take the title from club team mate Aston Williams 72.

The under 12 Championship was this year contested by some 13 players and history was made as Ben Small took the trophy for the third year running, this is a great achievement.  Ben had a gross stableford score of 28 four points clear of the runner up Adam Harris Yeovil who had 24 both played extremely well and I look forward to watching both these youngsters develop over the coming years.  The Handicap trophy was taken by another promising youngster from Christchurch Rhys Card who had 46 points six clear of Weymouth youngster Oliver Coward.

It still concerns me even with these numbers that some youngsters are missing out and not entering this Championship, it is a great days golf and allows all the young ones a chance to compete in a County event against their piers lets hope we get more along next year at Wareham GC.
