County Stroke Play Championship 2010

Sherborne Golf Club 01 August 2010David Cook

On a bright sunny morning and with the green staff of Sherborne presenting a course in splendid condition a good test was laying ahead for this year's field. The local favourite Tony Lawrence got us under way and returned a 1 over 73 along with his playing partner Rhys Francis. Garrett Salver Winner Kevin Robinson Yeovil came home with the lowest score of the morning a super 69 putting him clear by two shots from the ever impressive youngster Robbie Mabb Weymouth who was 1 under. Last years Champion David Cook Parkstone was in with a 73 along with Ferndown's Andrew Windsor. The main talking point at lunch was the pin on fifteen where County Champion Tom Leech came to grief not content with putting his ball of

f the green at the first attempt he managed to repeat the action a second time. Players who came to grief blamed the pin position but there were a few birdies there during the morning round.

The second round got under way with all to play for as they chased down Kevin Robinson. Players also had nothing to complain over any more after having had the pin moved several feet on fifteen. Tony set the target with a level par round putting him on 145 a 1 over total but this was soon beaten by Andrew Windsor who shot 1 under for a level 144 total and the club house lead. One only discounts the ever present David Cook at your peril and he again proved he can play coming home in with a 70 for a 1 under total of 143. So it was down to Kevin to prise the trophy now from David but sadly for Kevin a three putt at the last saw his hopes disappear with a 75 giving him a 144 total and putting him into third place on count back. Steve Sidney Queens Park had a good afternoon coming home in 70 one of only 3 players to break par. So David Cook retained the Dorset Stroke Play Trophy and his title for the second year.

Tom Lawerence The Weymouth Jubilee Cup was however in the hands of local lad Tom Lawrence with net rounds of 70 & 71 pipping Lee Booth Parkstone by 1 shot to take the trophy.

So all that was left was to decide who the 72 hole Champion who would pick up the Donald Holmes Championship Cup it was tight this year with Garrett Salver winner Kevin Robinson with a total of 280 holding off young Robbie Mabb by some 3 shots. It has been a good year for Kevin who has got down to scratch was Runner Up in the County Championship and is shortly to make his debut in a County First Team fixture.

Although disappointing to see our County Champion no return after his exploits on fifteen and not bother to go out in the afternoon we wish him every success when he goes to Woodhall Spa to see if he can become the first from Dorset to lift the Champion of Champions Trophy.

We would like to thank the members of Sherborne GC for hosting the event and our Sponsor Ringwood Brewery who kindly give the club two barrels of their finest ale for hosting this years County Stroke Play Championship.
