We got the 2019 competition under way at Sherborne with the weather set fair but a very testing wind. Rain was forecast for the afternoon with some possible heavy showers typical SEBO weather! As is usual both courses were presented to the players in tip top condition and as the scoring proved both proved to test and challenge them all fully. A field of 66 players all hoping by tomorrow evening to be crowned the South England Boys Champion.
Scoring proved hard in the first round with only two players breaking par with the best round of the morning going to Tom Addy from Australia with 68 and Broadstones Alex Johnston on 69. Sam West was on level along with Jack Jeffery from Exeter G&CC.
Scoring in the second round proved to be better with 8 players going into the red. Sherborne Boy Ollie Griffiths and Oliver Gaisford both shooting 3 under 69's. The morning leader Tom went backwards with a 3 over 75 and Alex improved on his morning 3 under with another sub par round of 71. Liphook's Sam West also moved in to contention going one better than his morning level par round.
So with the start sheet flipped so the better scores go out last in the next two rounds with moved over to Yeovil. A few early showers and once more a testing wind provided a great challenge for the players. Best round of the Moring went to Thomas Stephens Trevose with a fine 4 under par 67. Alex Johnston found it tough and relinquished his lead with a 5 over 76 to Sam West who went to 2 under for the 54 hole total.
The fourth round saw some fine golf as boys tried to get back with four shooting two under and Luke Perkins Frilford Heath went one better with a fine 68. The leaders were in a match play situation Tom Addy finished one over on 72 for a 291 total and securing third place. Alex finished two over in his final round for a 289 total and two shots ahead was Sam West who finished with a 74 to give him a 287 total and the title of South of England Boys Champion. Congratulations to Sam and to all the players for making it a great Championship, both clubs did the players proud with courses presented to the highest standard and we look forward to returning next year.
Our thanks to both Sherborne and Yeovil for allowing the event to take place at their course and to all members and staff for making this year's event such a success.
