County Stroke Play Championship 2019

Callum Ward Stroke Play Champion Knighton Heath Golf Club 18 August 2019

The County Stroke Play Championship got under way at Knighton Heath Golf Club on what was supposed to be a rain free day!  The first hour saw some torrential rain come down but once it cleared the conditions improved.  The course was in great condition with very good greens.  Late comer to the field Liam Parsons Weymouth was leader with a fine 72 which also put him in contention for the Jubilee Cup on a net 66.  The 72 was soon matched by Todd Sothcott Ferndown Lee Wyeth Broadstone, and John Walbridge Ashley Wood.  Knighton’s Tom Parsons took over with a fine 71 until Callum Ward DG&CC came home with a one under 69.  County Champion Lee James was still out there but he took over the lead going one better with a 2 under 68.

The afternoon saw the wind get stronger making scoring a little more difficult.  Liam Parsons was home early on with a fine 74 which put him right in contention for the Handicap prize and the Weymouth Golden Jubilee Cup.  Early signs were scoring was proving more difficult but there were some who improved on their morning scores such as Jack Pallister 74, Matt Sandy 73, Andrew Robson 72.  It filtered back that Callum was four under after a fine birdie on the fifteenth. Bogies at the next two holes cut that back but a fine par on the last saw him finish with a fine 2 under par 68 and it was now all down to how the current holder Lee was doing.  He was in fact 3 under at the turn but a bogey at the thirteenth and also the last two holes saw him come home in level par 70.  So we had a new Stroke Play Champion in Callum Ward DG&CC.

Congratulations to Callum on winning the 2019 Stroke Play Championship.
