South England Boys Championship 2017Jensen Hull South England Boys Champion

Sherborne & Yeovil 8 & 9 August.

Champion: Jensen Hull Hever Castle GC  71 68 69 68  276    -10

We got the 2017 competition under way at Sherborne and whilst the early weather was damp it dried up to be a good day.  As usual the course was in tip top condition and presented a great challenge for a full field of 66 players all hoping by tomorrow evening to be crowned the South England Boys Champion.

This year’s competition got under way at Yeovil on a cloudy morning with a few showers here and there but nothing like the previous day when it poured down, all credit to the Green staff of both venues on presenting the courses in tip top condition as always.

Scoring was good in the first round with eleven players breaking par and five others on par.  The two best rounds of the morning went to Matthew Bell from Lilley Brook and Barclay Brown from Hallamshire who both were 3 under par 69’s one ahead of Harewood Downs Charlie Herbert and Stoke Parks Taylor Paul.  The best Dorset lad was Sam Atkins with a 73 one over par round.

Scoring in the second round was also good with Jensen Hull Hever Castle and Hugo Kedzlie Spalding GC both having super rounds of 68 4 under par.  Morning leader Barclay Brown had another fine 69 to put him on 6 under and leader after two rounds.  Jesus De La Torre Sand Martins and Adam Harris Sherborne also had fine rounds of 69pulling them up the leader board.  Morning leader Matthew Bell slipped down the leader board with a 74.  Last Year’s under 16 winner Tom Stagg pulled himself up the leader board with a fine 70 to leave him 3 off the lead.

So with the start sheet flipped so the better scores go out last the third round got under way at Yeovil with the rain coming down.  It was a very dismal day weather wise but all credit to the green staff at Yeovil who got the course up and playing and with a little squeegeeing here and there it stayed playable throughout to ensure the 72 holes got played.   It proved to be a good challenge to all the players with some making their way up the leader board and others slipping down.  Barclay Brown was only level to leave him on 6 under.  Jensen Hull took over as leader with a fine 2 under 69 to move to seven under for the Championship.  Best round of the morning went to Enrique Dimayuga Walton Heath with a fine 4 under par.  The rain continued but we did get a few dry spell late afternoon but Jensen Hull had the bit firmly between his teeth and having taken the lead he was not going to give way and he had a final round of 68 3 under par giving him a Championship total of -10 under par 5 clear of Hugo Kedzlie who went one better in the final round shooting 67 4 under par to put him on 281 -5 under par total.

Congratulations to Jensen Hull the 2017 South England Boys Open Champion on the twenty fifth anniversary of the competition and all the players it was once again a fantastic competition with a fine winner both clubs did the players proud with courses presented to the highest standard and we look forward to returning next year.
