County Stroke Play Championship 2017

Came Down Golf Club 20 August 2017

The County Stroke Play Championship got under way at Came Down Golf Club in what was warm if overcast conditions.   So given that there was a small field it would be interesting to see who came out on top.  It wasn’t long before the course claimed it’s first victim when Robbie Mabb threw in the towel after five holes complaining about the pin position!  In it’s defence it didn’t play the hardest on the day.  Matt Sandy was the first to break par with a fine 69 with Tom Leech and David Cook both on level par but the round of the morning went to Lee James with a fine 66 to take a commanding lead.

The afternoon saw the rain drift in and then out but when it came in it was heavy making sure all the players got a soaking at some time and with some low cloud making the referees job more challenging it was a great afternoon at Came Down. The scoring was reasonable with three players breaking par.  The first of them was local Gareth Hughes with a fine 69 equalled then by Didsbury’s Andy Rideout and the winner Lee James.  Mark Rankin Weymouth had a fine level par round putting him on top for the Handicap top spot where he could only be knocked off by club team mate Billy Hathway who playing at the tail took the brunt of the weather but to his credit managed a fine 74.  So our County Champion Lee James has done the double taking the Stroke Play event a great achievement on his return to the amateur ranks.

Weymouth Jubilee Cup

It proved to be a good day for Weymouth pair with Mark Rankin taking the the Handicap Weymouth Jubilee Cup with a fine net 136 four under pipping Billy Hathway by two shots.

Donald Holmes

With Robbie Mabb going out early it left Lee in total command of the Donald Holmes Trophy with a total of 2013 for the 3 played rounds he was some eleven shots clear of second placed Andy Rideout.
