South England Boys Championship 2016Tom Plumb 2016 South England Boys Open Winner

Yeovil & Sherborne 2 & 3 August.

Champion: Tom Plumb Sherborne GC  69 68 68 69  274    -12

This year’s competition got under way at Yeovil on a cloudy morning with a few showers here and there but nothing like the previous day when it poured down, all credit to the Green staff of both venues on presenting the courses in tip top condition as always.

Scoring proved difficult for most in the first round this year with only 5 players breaking par.  The ever impressive Tom Stagg from Salisbury & South Wilts had a one under 70 with the lead after the morning opener being shared by 4 players all on 2 under 69 Dorset’s Tom Plumb and Sean Dimmick with Jake Bolton and Danny Daniels.  Scoring got better in the afternoon round with some eleven players breaking par.  The best was a cracking 66 by Alfie Fox putting him right back in contention on 4 under. George Carroll had a good 67 to bring him back into the mix Tom Stagg had another 70 and Tom Plumb had 68 to take the lead on 5 under.

So with the start sheet flipped so the better scores go out last the third round got under way at Sherborne and with the sun shining we were in for a great days golf and we were not disappointed.  8 Players went under par in this round including the leaders.  Tom Stagg shot 67 to pull into second spot two behind Tom Plumb who had a 68. Alfie Fox hung in with them with a two under 70.  It was still all to play for in the afternoon round and there was a lot of pressure on Sherborne’ s Tom Plumb .  Tom Stagg failed to break par in his last round  and par left him on a 7 under total for the four rounds. Alfie Fox lost his way in the last round taking him out of contention.  Weymouth’s Sean Dimmick had a one under 71 to lift him into third spot on one over total of 287 along with Jack Cope and Jake Bolton.  Adam Harris had two fine rounds of 71 and 67 to lift him to sixth spot overall.  The Championship though went to Tom Plumb who continued to break par with another fine 69 and a 12 under total of 274 giving him the South England Boys title.
