Ferndown GC - 20 July 2014

2014 Boys Champion – James Singleton Ferndown GC

This years Boys Championship got under way at Ferndown with a field of 39 boys all competing to become the County Boys Amateur Champion and with a glorious day and a course in superb condition what more could the players ask for.  To be fair the boys did not disappoint as the scoring proved to be very good.  The championship is played over 36 holes and was very keenly contested, players jostled for position and Ferndown’s James Singleton led the way with a 1 under 70.  This was closely followed by defending Champion Sam Roles with the mornings best round score of 68 3 under par.    Billy- Joe kept himself in contention with a 2 over 73 along with jack Baker and Parkstone’s Steffen Foley along with Lyme’s David Lyon; team mate Stuart Wight went one better with a 72

So it was onto the second round and all players given the superb conditions could still shoot low and be in contention for the top spot.  Billy-Joe led the way with a fine one under 70 for a 143 total.  Then in comes James Singleton matching Sam’s morning round of 68 to give him the club house lead with a great 138 total four under for the day.  So it was all eyes on last year’s champion Sam to see if he could keep the morning fine play going sadly for Sam it was not to be coming home in 75 for a 143 total pushing him down to fourth.  David Lyon went three better in his second round with a fine 70 to take second spot on count back from Billy-Joe and Sam.  James Durrant finished fifth with a 73 - 72 145 total.

Billy Hathway Boys Handicap ChampionThe competition for the Handicap Championship was hotting up the morning Sam held the top spot from James and young Billy Hathway from Weymouth both on 68 and the every present Sam Brooke was also in contention with a net 70 as was Highcliffe’ s Tom Silva-Perez there were lots of red figures in this score sheet. The second round saw James take control with his net 66 one better than Sam Brooke who had a fine 71 net 65 to put him one behind James. The title went to the player coming in last Weymouth’s Billy Hathway who kept his cool to come home in 74 net 65 for a 133 net total giving him the Handicap Championship this is a great achievement for someone who has an 11 handicap but had to play off 9 for the competition prizes.
