Four Counties Junior ChampionshipDorset Boys

Knighton Heath GC 10-11 April 2013

General

The event comprised of a morning Stroke Play round for both the Individual and Team Stroke Play Championship, which is followed by Three Inter-County matches to determine the Inter County Match Play Championship. Knighton Heath was in very good condition given the weather we have been through lately and for the first days play in the main we were blessed with some fine sunny periods which saw us through the stroke play and opening holes of the first matches before we had some heavy rain for the remainder of the day.  The last day stayed relatively dry but was cloudy; we did manage to complete the competition without any weather stops.

Our congratulations to Somerset who took both the Individual and Team Shield beating the Dorset boys into second place as a team, but this was a great start to the new coaching regime and it was clear the boys have bought into the new coaching strategy with some very fine play and a great disciplined manner around the course. Tom Sloman Somerset became the  individual champion with a fine 68 two shots better than his team mate Will Bennett, Harry Hall Cornwall spoilt the party by taking third place on count back from Somerset’s Matt Wells with the Dorset pair Billy-Joe and James Singleton coming in next with 72.

So to the afternoons matches, Dorset took on Cornwall with Somerset playing Devon the Dorset team set about the task of beating old rivals Cornwall, but the first two out were not firing on all four cylinders with Harry Mann losing 3&1 and whilst Tom Oliver battled hard he also went down 2&1, Jordan Howlett lifted the team spirits with a splendid 6&5 win getting finished before the rain started.  George long battled hard but just got pipped on the 20th. So it was 3-1 and Billy-Joe hung in with some fine golf to take his match 1up and with Jack coming fresh from his splendid Henderson victory it was soon 3 apiece which meant it was down to the foursomes pair of James Singleton and Sam Roles both played very well in the morning and they gelled well as a foursomes pair always in control winning 4&2 giving Dorset a 4-3 win.  Last year’s winners Devon also got off to a winning start beating Somerset 4-3.

Day 2

The team were up against Somerset and it was again a hard morning for Harry and Oliver who both lost but for the rest it was all good and whilst the matches were tight Dorset were in control to take a fine win overall 5-2 and with Devon beating Cornwall also 5-2 the afternoon could not be set up better With Dorset playing Devon in a winner takes all situation, whilst Somerset and Cornwall fought it out to avoid the dreaded “Wooden Spoon” .  It is hard to know what was said at lunch but it was a very inspiring team talk as Dorset went out and not to put too fine a word on it blitzed Devon 6-1 to take the Match Play Championship for the first time since 2001.  Somerset also beat Cornwall by the same score line to leave Cornwall without a win.  Congratulations to the Dorset side and the new Manager Paul D’Arcy on a fine win, they have worked hard under Performance Coach Dan Frost over the past weeks and their hard work and focus has paid off.Dorset match Play Champions

We now look forward to going to West Cornwall in 2014.
