Category I & II Championship

Broadstone GC 10 September 2013

The Category I & II Championships were played at the “Gleneagles of the South” Broadstone GC on a nice sunny day, the greens and course were in superb condition and the course was going to prove a stern test for all the competitors.  We had a good turnout for the championship this year and the early starter Phil Allen showed the way with a fine gross 71 net 68 and considering he started bogey, bogey that was a fine last sixteen holes of golf!  His playing partners were George Carroll who had a bad day at the “office” and James Sowerby from Sherborne who at the turn was one under after birdies at the third and fifth sadly this slipped away on the back nine. Paul D’Arcy took second place with a fine net 69 and was left pondering his triple bogey at the second, this was a score equalled by Parkstone’s Glen Gallagher who just missed out on second on count back.  Highcliffe Castle’s Gary Prince had a fine net 70 to take the fourth slot in the Category I championship.  So congratulations to Phil who a couple of years ago got pipped right at the death, not this time he was crowned the County Category I Champion.

So The Category II Championship was once again well contested from players around the County and early leader was Canford Magna’s Steve Wonnacott who had a net 75 which include a rare two on the fifteenth. Steve was soon off the top spot as Parkston’s Mark Boyd came home with a net 71 which looking at the card was pretty much down to good steady golf and would have been better had the sixteenth been kinder to him.  Ronald Webb from Bournemouth & Meyrick Park had a net 72 to take second slot the rest of the field enjoyed their day but found the going and scoring tough, so Mark was crowned the County  Category II Champion.

Runner Up: Ronald webb Bournemouth & Merick Park GC
Third: Steve Wonnacott Canford Magna GC

Our Congratulations to Phil Allen who will go forward to next year’s Gold Medal event at Woodhall Spa representing both his Club and County.   Sincere thanks go to Broadstone for allowing us to hold the event on their course along with Vice-Captain Graham Wilkins for his kind words of welcome to all the players and officials.  With the current changes and the proposed winter work I look forward to a stunning County Championship there in 2014.
