Cyril Nash Memorial TrophyJoe Rice Canford Magna Cyril Nash Winner

Wareham GC 09 August 2013

Today saw the 2013 Inter-club Cyril Nash Memorial Trophy competition get under way on a very well presented course here at Wareham GC. Another year in which we saw entry numbers down with only 8 of the counties 30 clubs taking part. There was some excellent golf to watch it never ceases to amaze how well our youngsters can hit the ball. I do believe the wind made it tough for some as the early scores were slightly lower than usual. The early starters such as George Carroll DG&CC, Stuart Wight and Cameron Moss Lyme Regis, Steffen Foley Parkstone and Lewis Gilligan Sturminster were all in the low 30’s. Sam Brooke then took the club house lead with a fine 35 points which was equalled and would have been bettered had Billy Hathway Weymouth checked his card properly! Last year’s Champion Jessica Stott could only manage 31 points and then Rebecca Martin took over with a fine 37 points. Ben Graham from Weymouth came home with 40 points but was soon pushed into second place by Joe Rice Canford Magna who had a fine 41 points to take this year’s championship. It was an interesting team event which went right down to the last two groups and when Simon rose Weymouth came home with 34 points the Weymouth boys thought they had pipped Parkstone to this year’s Team Trophy only to have it dashed as Canford’s Michael Maud in the last group came in with a great 38 points to push Canford to the top by four clear points leaving the Weymouth Boys in second place. Overall a great day’s golf enjoyed by all those who took part.

The Junior Committee wish to thank Wareham GC for hosting the event and all those who took part for their support to this event it is a great opportunity to allow club youngsters with a higher handicap to represent the club in a competitive competition. The event will change slightly next year as it becomes the England Golf Junior Champion Club qualifier with the winning team having the opportunity to represent both their club and County at Woodhall Spa we hope more clubs will take part and we will return to Wareham on Sunday 6 July 2014.
