2011 Boys Champion – Harry Mitchell

This years Boys Championship got under way at Crane Valley with a field of 45 boys all competing to become the County Boys Champion and with the sun set to shine all day it promised to be a good test for the Youngsters.  The two favourites were early starters in the first round and it proved to be a great tussle between Robbie Mabb County Championship Runner up and Harry Mitchell.  Harry got the best of the morning with a two under par 70 with Robbie just one behind on a 1under 71.  The next best in was Fraser Dawson on 75 followed by Highcliffe’s Alex Spencer on 76.  Best under 16 after the mornings round was young George Seed form Lyme Regis on 77 closely followed by Broadstone’s Jordan Howlett.

The cut came at 85 and twenty three players went out in the afternoon to contest the Championships.  Harry and Robbie were together and it was nip and tuck and after a bogey for Harry and a Birdie by Robbie on the second it was going to be a real tussle, at the turn Robbie still led by one.  Bogies on Eleven and Twelve for Robbie saw Harry back in the lead and when just in the nick of time Harry found his ball on seventeen in the rough and managed to get it out and find a birdie he knew the Championship was in his grasp and with a good solid par on the last  saw him home in 74 for a level par score over the two rounds of 144,  Robbie had to settle again for second place on 147 and it was pleasing to see Fraser Dawson showing his potential to take third place on 149.

  Young George Seed found it tough going in the second round and County Youngster Jordan Howlett took the Under 16 championship with a good second round of 76 and a total of 154.

Harry Mitchell picked up the Weymouth Cup with his net 68 one shot clear of Weymouth’s David Lown.  Harry was also part of the winning team which also included Fraser Dawson and Harry Mann and they will go forward to represent Dorset at the EGU Champion Club event at Woodhall Spa on the 20-21 Aug 2011.

Lastly on behalf of the Dorset Golf Union we would like to thank Crane Valley Golf Club for hosting the event, the course was in excellent condition.
