Colts v Sussex Sunday 23 August 2009 Cottesmore GC
Result: Dorset 2½ Sussex 9½
With two County Juniors playing for the first time it was interesting to see how the pairings jelled. Kevin Garwood and Jackson Bowes did well to win 4&3 as did Andy Myers and Rob Cunningham. The two more experienced pairs lost, albeit Rowan and Jon Putman closely. There were a number of Houdini like events, such as Jackson putting his tee shot into the ditch on the 7th, Kevin taking it out just over the green and Jackson holing his chip shot for a most unlikely half. A good morning’s result 2:2.
After lunch we were disappointed to find that a mixed event was teeing off and late so were forced to play the singles matches in fours – not the best of ways to compete. After nine holes the results looked promising with the matches evenly split. However the afternoon heat seemed to take its toll on Dorset more than Sussex. Even though well watered and sustained with fruit and other nourishment one by one the boys fell! Kevin secured a half and three other matches went only one down. Jackson and Rob did pretty well losing only 2&1 and 3&1 respectively. Jon Welch was heading for a half when his opponent hacked out from the deep rough, got his third to the edge of the final green and sank a long put for a birdie 4 to match Jon’s certain four after a great drive and excellent second into the green. Some stirring stuff but a big win for Sussex to record their first Colts win of the season.
Colts v Kent Sunday 9 August 2009 Yeovil GC
Result: Dorset 2½ Kent 9½
On a beautiful sunny day at Yeovil Golf Club, the Colts took on Kent. The morning foursomes looked like being tied at 2-2 after Matt Walker holed from over 20 feet on the 18th green, but Kent followed us in from 10 feet to halve their game.........
Colts v Hampshire Sunday 19 July 2009 Knighton Heath GC
Result: Dorset 4 Hampshire 8
On a very windy day at Knighton Heath, the Colts took on a strong Hampshire side. The morning foursomes was very one sided, the only chance of a result was when James Wythe and Harry Mitchell played the last All Square..............
Colts v IOW GU Sunday 31 May 2009 Highcliffe Castle GC
Result: Dorset 6 IOW GU 9
The annual match against the Isle of Wight took place at Highcliffe Castle GC on 31St May. The course was in excellent condition, bathed in sunshine and swept by a light breeze. The foursomes got underway in the absence of two players substituted by Ian Hulse and Bill Kennedy. Due to examinations and County commitments a number of new players were fielded, including one member of the Under 14 squad.
Under the circumstances the morning result was not altogether surprising. After an excellent light lunch the singles began at 1.3Opm, ahead of scheduled time, with Jamie Edwards taking his place in stead of Ian Hulse. The afternoon saw a much better performance from the team with Jamie Edwards, Hany Shaw and Lewis Keightley coming in with sound wins, a half from Alex Kerr and two close wins by Luke Hirst and Bill Kennedy each one up.
The overall result was a win for the island by 9:6. Grateful thanks go to Ian Hulse for using his valuable Sunday morning to play, and all those whose revision time was sacrificed in order to play for the County. Final thanks go to Highcliffe Castle GC for hosting us so well and to Steve Howlett who supported the team throughout the day.
