JUNIOR ELITE SQUAD DESERT SPRINGS 2008
On Saturday 1st March the Junior Elite Squad comprising of Darryl McMahon, Corey Setting Off.jpgCoshan, Ben Trickett, Lloyd Walton, Sam Parsons, Rob Cunningham, Isaac Fredricks and Billy-Joe Bugden accompanied by the Jack Roberts Junior Secretary and County Coach Martin Cummins left for a weeks warm weather training at the Desert Springs Golf Complex. The team arrived to temperatures well into the 20’s so all could and would enjoy an intensive week’s golf.
The team got straight into practice mode on the Sunday as Martin put them through various practice routines prior to there first round in the afternoon which saw the team playing a Stableford first winners were scratch Sam Hard at Work.jpgParsons and net being Isaac Fredricks. The players not scoring well ended up in the pool that evening back at the Hotel. The next day was soon upon us and again Martin put them through short game practice routines before the afternoon saw two teams of four battle it out in match play format Jacks team just came out on top with some fine golf being played by all if not the results some would have expected. Wednesday saw a full day of practice prior to our match against Essex Under 18’s and under 16’s on Thursday. This triangular match was a good opportunity for the more inexperienced boys to learn from teams whose highest handicappers were 2 and 3. Although we lost to both of the teams from Essex the matches were played in great spirit so much so both managers from Essex were rooting for young Billy-Joe as he took both his opponents down the eighteenth before losing out.
The result was not the important factor it is the match play experience which is valuable prior to going to the Four Counties Tournament at Saunton in early April. The week continued well with boys challenging one another over the short skills and putting competitions with Rob “Chewy” Cunningham taking the skills title after beating Billy- Joe in a play off and Darryl showed his expertise with the putter beating Corey in the Final. The final round was played in a medal format and Corey just pipped Darryl to the scratch prize with “Chewy” Cunningham took the handicap. The week is very intensive and it is hoped the boys will take all that has been taught and put it to good practice through the year and bring home the “bacon”.
