Seniors South West Championships

Wednesday 17th July 2024 - Thursday 18th July 2024

Kingsdown Golf Club

Dorset Seniors arrived on Monday 15th July for an afternoon practice round at Kingsdown golf club with a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in place, and as a result only the first 9 holes was managed.

The following day, Tuesday, was dull with showers and a full 18 holes was played to prepare for the competition on the next two days.

The weather for the actual competition was surprisingly pleasant with sunshine and temperatures up to 28C, a marked difference to the practice days.

In the first day of competition Dorset did not play as well as hoped and languished towards the bottom of the County standings.

The course was in good condition but the greens were much slower than expected and this resulted in too many 3 putts in spite of good approach play.

On the second day of the competition Dorset played much better having discussed the pace of the greens at length over a great team building session on Wednesday evening at a local pub  recommended by Ashley!

Dorset Seniors eventually finished 3rd in the Team event, only a couple of shots behind Wiltshire who finished second as Dorset had last year.

The National Finals qualifiers were once again Cornwall who had a very strong team including ex England and ex Professional players.

Phil Bill came within 1 shot of going into a 3-way tie for the Individual Championship, just missing a 6-foot putt on the 18th hole on the last day to post a one over 73 to complement an excellent 75 on the previous day.

Next year the South West Seniors Championship is at Minehead Golf Club where Dorset hope to feature more strongly in the National Finals Qualifying.
