Dorset County Golf Union – County Championship 2024

The Dorset County Golf Amateur Championship was held this weekend (24th – 26th May) at the superbly presented Crane Valley Golf Club in Verwood. Lee James from Broadstone Golf Club claimed the prestigious title for the fourth time, outgunning fellow Broadstone member Ashley Colloff in the final by a score of 4&2.

Broadstone players dominated the three-day event winning all available trophies:

Graham Butler Trophy (County Champion) – Lee james

Garrett Salver (36-hole strokeplay) – Lee James

Luffman Cup (Colts Champion) – Jake Moore

Sika Trophy (Mid-Amateur) – Lee James

Team Championship – Broadstone Golf Club

The Championship began on Friday 24th May with 63 of the best players in Dorset teeing it up in the 36-hole strokeplay. Lee James edged out Oscar Hein (Parkstone) by one shot with scores of 69 & 73 for a combined total of -2. The top sixteen finishers claimed a spot in the important match play phase held Saturday & Sunday. Following some fantastic matches and a hole in one by Parkstone’s Jenson Bull at the tricky 194-yard 13th, it was the imperious Lee James who eventually claimed the title.

Dorset County Golf Union President, Peter O’Brien congratulated all the players on a well contested Championship and thanked Crane Valley Golf Club for hosting the event. The course was magnificent and all players and spectators were effusive in their praise for the hard work by Course Manager, Andy Clark, and his team. Lee James, speaking on behalf of the players, stated that the greens at Crane Valley were as good as any he had played at any course this year. County Secretary, Sean Whelan, was delighted with the event and thanked Hoburne Head of Golf, James Slade and everyone from Crane Valley for their support, unwavering enthusiasm and the impeccable level of detail provided both on and off the course.
