Dorset Seniors - Channel League Runners Up 2023

Dorset Seniors versus Glamorgan Seniors

Tuesday 5th September

Broadstone Golf Club

Everything was set up for Dorset’s last match of the year against Glamorgan and this happened to be the deciding fixture as to who was going to win the Channel League.

With Dorset having six wins under their belt and Glamorgan four wins and two halved games it was nicely set up for the finale. Luckily, the weather at Broadstone was perfect for golf, blue skies, a breeze and all set for an interesting days golf. The mornings greensomes finished three and a half, one and a half to Glamorgan and this was the first defeat Dorset had in greensomes all year, so it was imperative the team got off to a good start in the afternoon.

The game went backwards and forwards throughout the afternoon but after the first four matches Dorset had only won one game and that was Mike Spearing who won one up.

It was then left to new player Steve Pipe to restore some order and he had a fine win, two holes up and this was followed quicky by Dave Barton wining 4&3, Tony Coles 5&4 and Vince Joyce 7&6. It would all come down to the very last match of our game as to who was going to decide the win, the Glamorgan captain Jeff Thomas, a very experienced player, staved off a strong attack by Phil Bill eventually wining his match 2 up earning Glamorgan the victory 8.5 to 6.5. Dorset were an agonising 1.5 points away from winning the Channel League but after a long campaign in their first Channel League season, this was a fine result and the team should take all the credit for performing well over the entire season. The Dorset Seniors have a great work and team ethic; John Smith commented after the match that “it is an absolute privilege to play alongside these chaps and I know every effort was made in every match to ensure that we had a successful end to the season. Sadly, it was not to be, but it gives us great hope going into next season and we thoroughly look forward to improving in 2024.”

Finally, a special mention to Gary Earl and Phil Bil who represented Dorset in the Southwest game against the Midlands. They halved their morning foursomes match, and both won their individual games in the afternoon for 1.5 points apiece, a fine effort and congratulations to them both.
