Dorset Seniors - South West Qualifier 2023 Runners-Up
The 2023 South West County Golf Seniors Championship was held at Newquay Golf Club on the 19th and 20th July. The weather was sunny and warm with a blustery wind making the links course challenging with good greens having a number of complex undulations making placement of shots into the green critical.
Dorset had a solid first day and the team scores were very tight with Dorset just in front of Devon by 1 shot, with Wiltshire and Cornwall a further 2 and 3 shots back respectively. All very tight with five scores to count from each team.
On the second day Dorset started well and we were very much in contention well into the back 9-holes of the second round. However, two excellent rounds from Cornwall’s last two players and a couple of shots dropped late on by Dorset saw Cornwall leapfrog Wiltshire, Devon and ourselves to be deserved winners and qualify for the National Finals.
Dorset were fine runners up and featured highly in the individual awards with Todd Sothcott (Ferndown) and Ashley Beckett (Moors Valley) finishing second and third respectively in the gross scores both putting together two great rounds. Dave Barton (Moors Valley) won the individual over-65 prize and the entire team, although understandably very disappointed to have fallen short by such a small margin, put in a great effort representing Dorset.
Dorset Seniors travel back down the A30 in just over a week to take on Cornwall again at West Cornwall Golf Club in the next Channel League fixture and hopefully overturn the result at Newquay and retain their lead in the League table.
