South West Championship Week 2023

South West Week 2023

Perranporth Golf Club

Sunday 11th June

Dorset v Cornwall

We started our week with a very tough draw against the home county, Cornwall.

Tom Kollberg led Dorset out in the singles, playing some good golf but came up against a very difficult opponent around his home course, losing 4&3.

Andy Rideout was out next and came against a very experienced Cornish player in good form, also going down 4&3.

Up next, our newly crowned County Champion, Zac Mudford, played some brilliant golf on the back nine and won his first ever SW week point on his debut, 2&1. Brilliant performance.

The next two matches went in favour of Cornwall, with Matt Warren and Oscar Hein playing well but unfortunately both losing 2&1.

Another young debutant was Oliver Drewitt, who played some fantastic golf and won 5&4. Well done Oliver on your first SW week point

Match 7 also went in favour of the hosts, with Joe Turner losing a close game 2&1.

Tom Bastow was out number 8 and continued his form that he has been showing in the USA with a solid 1-hole win.

This meant we trailed 5-3 to Cornwall at lunch, but with foursomes worth a point and a half, it was all to play for.

Zac Mudford and Andy Rideout led us out in the foursomes, this was a very close match all the way round but unfortunately went the Cornish way by 1 hole.

Oscar Hein and Matt Warren went out second, despite some good golf this also swung in favour of the hosts by 2&1.

The last two matches went heavily in our favour, with some stunning golf from both pairings. The two Tom’s (Kollberg and Bastow) gave us our first point in the foursomes, winning 5&4.

Sam Roles & Joe Turner also put in a fine performance winning 4&3.

With the points shared in the afternoon this left the match 8-6 to Cornwall.

A very close match and could easily have gone either way. A big thank you to our supporters and for the players who didn’t play but caddied for their teammates.

Monday 12th June

Dorset v Somerset

Monday saw us play the defending matchplay champions, Somerset.

This turned out to be a very tough morning for the boys in the singles. The first three matches went to Somerset with Tom Kollberg, Oscar Hein and Andy Rideout unfortunately being defeated.

The fourth match bought our only point of that morning, with a very impressive performance from Matt Warren winning 4&3.

The remaining four matches saw a sea of red descend on the scoreboard. Somerset won all 4 remaining matches, Andy Simpson losing 6&4, Joe Turner 1 down, Jenson Bull 4&3 and Tom Bastow 3&1.

This was a disappointing morning for the boys, but we needed a big performance in the foursomes, and they were up for it.

Oscar Hein and Matt Warren led us out in the foursomes and played great golf to get us up and running in the foursomes with a 3&2 win.

Sam Roles and Joe Turner went out second after a great performance yesterday. Unfortunately, they came up against a very good Somerset pairing losing 3&2.

Out third was Tom Kollberg and Tom Bastow, both continued their impressive form together winning 5&4

The final pair was Andrew Simpson and Oliver Drewitt who despite a good performance found themselves the wrong side of a 2&1 defeat.

This meant the Final result was a win for Somerset 10-4.

A disappointing result, but Somerset are a very strong side. Thank you to our supporters and for the players who didn’t play but caddied for their teammates.

Tuesday 13th June

Tuesday is traditionally the English Counties Strokeplay qualifier, but the fog had different ideas. With the first group only getting to the 3rd hole before being called in, a 7-hour fog delay meant it was impossible to play the Strokeplay. This would now move to Wednesday and a reduced match play round would take place.

Dorset v Devon

The revised format (due to light) meant we would play 4 singles matchplay and 2 foursome matches at the same time.

Andy Rideout led us off in the singles, and played some quality golf but was eventually beaten by 2 holes in what was a close match all the way round.

Sam Roles was off second and despite playing well, found it tough going against a strong Devon player losing 3&2.

Joe Turner was the third singles out, and very much a similar story played some good golf but came up against a strong Devon player also losing 3&2.

The fourth Dorset player was Andrew Simpson, he put in a very strong performance beating his opponent 2&1 to get us our first point.

In the foursomes we had Matt Warren and Oscar Hein and the two Tom’s (Kollberg and Bastow). Both pairings found it tough going, going behind early to good play from Devon. Despite rallying and winning holes around the turn, both pairings found themselves on the wrong side of the results. Matt and Oscar lost by 1 hole, while the two Tom’s lost 5&4.

A strong performance from Devon lead to a 6 -1 loss. This was a hard defeat to take as the boys had played well but had come up against better golf on the day. A big thank you to our supporters and for the players who didn’t play, but caddied for their teammates.

This is a long week and everyone was determined to keep playing well and the results will come.

Wednesday 14th June

Strokeplay

Due to fog delays the strokeplay was scheduled for Wednesday and again plans were thwarted by the weather.

More fog meant the strokeplay went to 18 holes and a strong performance by our six-man team meant we were on +16 just five strokes behind the winner’s Gloucestershire.

6-man scores:

Joe Turner 72

Tom Kollberg 74

Matt Warren 74

Oscar Hein 75

Andy Rideout 75

Andy Simpson 78

Other team scores:

Jenson 78

Ollie 82

Andy Robson 84

Thursday 15th June

Dorset v Wiltshire

Finally a day without fog delays!

Andy Simpson let the way in a closely fought match unfortunately losing 1 down.

Jenson started very well being 3 up after 5 but his opponent dug in squaring the match after 10 holes before running out a 3&2 winner.

Tom Kollberg in match three was behind for much of the round but a great finish meant he won 1up.

Match 4 saw Andy Rideout play well all the way round winning 2/1.

Zac had a tough game unfortunately losing on the 13th and Matt Warren fought hard but lost 3/2.

Ollie in match 7 was up against it right from the start and lost 7/6 and in the final singles game Joe again played good golf but succumbed 2/1.

That left the match score at 2-6 to Wiltshire

In the afternoon foursomes Zac and Andy Simpson led the way and were up but the match but finished all square.

Match 2 saw Andy Robson and Andy Rideout also come down 18 and won the last to win 1up aided by a bit of Robson short game skills!

In match 3 Oscar and Matt were never in trouble and despite 2 late birdies from Wiltshire they won 5&4.

Tom Kollberg and Joe fought hard at the end game but lost 3&2.

Overall despite a great fightback in the afternoon it was not enough to catch Wiltshire and our congratulations go to them.

Also thanks to our supporters and for the players who didn’t play all day but caddied for their team mates.

Friday 16th June

Dorset v Gloucestershire

The final day saw Dorset against Gloucestershire. It was our aim to finish the week on a positive note.

In the singles Tom Kollberg led the way winning 2/1. Match 2 had Andy Simpson who unfortunately lost 3/2.

Oscar in the third game played well again and finished on the 16th green with a hole in one to win his match!

In the fourth game Nick Hopwood, playing in his South West debut, played well but lost on the 17th green.

Match 5 Ollie finished the wrong end of a 4/3 and in the sixth game Matt again played well winning 1up.

Match 7 had Jenson playing against a strong opponent and unfortunately he went down by 6/5.

In the final match Joe had a great game winning 4/3.

So onto the foursomes with the match tied at 4-4; Oscar and Matt led the way in a close contest squaring the match on the 18th.

In match 2 Nick Hopwood and Andy Simpson lost 6&4. The third game Tom Kollberg and Joe also went to the last green winning 1up. The final match had Ollie and Andy Robson and they fought hard but ultimately lost 6&5

That left the match score as 6.25 to 7.75 in Gloucestershire’s favour and our congratulations to them.

Summary

It’s been a tough week for the players but our thanks go to all of them for their commitment and for supporting their team mates when not playing in a session. Thank you to all the Dorset officials, managers, coaches and caddies including Joe Miners, Kevin Garwood, John Gordon, Stuart Mackenzie, Martin Williamson, Peter O’Brien and Sean Whelan for their support this week.

I am pleased to report that Joe Turner and Tom Kollberg have been put forward as the Dorset nominations for the South West match vs the Midlands in October.

We now concentrate on the remaining channel league fixtures for 2023.
