Conditions were very hot and dry; we had two members of the team play their first county match at Remedy Oak.

The top two foursome matches, which were played by John Welsh & Harry Mitchell, and Billy-Joe Budgen & Arron Crabb, lost 5 & 4 respectively.

The following two foursomes were a closer contest; Tom Peacock & Tom Atkins (making his debut), at 1up playing 18 against Liam Cox & Callum Mckay. They lost the 18th to half their match. The remaining foursomes pairing – Tom Leech and Tom Robson, were 2 up with 4 to play and ended with a half match.

The morning foursomes ended 3 / 1 to Surrey; at one point it was looking like an end result of 2 / 2 earlier that morning, so clearly the outcome could have been better.

So into the singles, Arron Crabb in the top match took on Henry Smart and lost 5 and 4. Harry Mitchell was our number two; his win at 1 up kept our hopes high. Matches 3 & 4, Tom Robson & John Welsh lost 4 and 3 respectively. Tom Atkins followed with a win at 3 and 2 with a good performance, played with incredible maturity for his debut game. Billy-Joe Budgen came up against some very good golf from Callum McKay, losing 4 and 3; however, Billy-Joe played some great golf.

Hopes of salvaging some dignity were unfortunately lost; Tom Peacock had a close match with Simon Crockett, but came short losing 2 down. A similar story for our anchor man Tom Leech, where a close fought match ended in a loss of 1 down.

Considering that we were short by four players and had two new starters to the team, the outcome (albeit a loss), was played very well against a strong team such as Surrey. It was great to see two new members play so confidently – increasing the strength and size of the squad for future matches.
