On Sunday the 1st of September we played our final league match of the 2013 season against sussex at Camedown.
A win for Dorset by 8 matches to 4 gave us an outside chance of winning the league, dependant on the Surrey vs Kent match at Hindhead, played on the same day.
The morning foursomes began with David Cook and Tom Atkins playing Richard Fung-on and Jack Floyd. The Dorset pair played solid golf winning 7 & 5. The second match was a closer affair with the Dorset pair prevailing 1up. The third match went the way of Sussex before our final pair holding firm winning 3&2 to give Dorset a 3-1 lead at lunch.
The singles commenced with the top match also going the way of Dorset before the Sussex fightback began. Match two, three and four all want the way of Sussex to make it 4-4 bringing them within 2 points of the halved match they need to win the league themselves.
Along came our debutant and local member, The Dorset Boys Champion Sam Roles who was 5 down after 8 holes only to haul himself back to all square after 17 holes. To the credit of his opponent Wayne Hawes holed a pressure putt on the final green to remain all square.
Harry Mitchell won 5&3 in match seven giving us 6 points and Tom Robson was 2 down with 5 to play before winning 2 holes before standing on the 17th tee all square. A good drive near the green was followed by an excellent chip and run which went in the hole for an eagle 2 meaning he was 1up playing the last. This is where the match remained and Dorset won 7 matches to 5.
It wasn't the 8-4 we needed but as it turned out Surrey won their match comprehensively and therefore became East League champions on goal difference over Dorset and Sussex who were all tied on 5 points.
This has been a great end to the season for Dorset and I am immensely proud of my team, my Vice Captain Dean Barnes and first team performance coach Dan Frost. Four junior players have started their first team careers with success and the team has more strength and depth. I hope we can continue to progress next season.
My thanks also go to all the supporters of Dorset, Mr Mitchell and Mr Long again were in attendance. A special thanks to Doug Pratt and Steve Roberts who caddied to Sam Roles and for John Gough for his support, this is always appreciated.
Thank you to the President and Vice President and Chairman for their support and to the county secretary Ian Hulse for everything he does for the team.
