Today was the first league match of the new season at Hockley Golf Club against Hampshire. The morning foursomes got off to a great start with our first 3 match establishing early leads. The first match was then pegged back by some fine play from the opposition becoming all square on the 17th tee. Tom Peacock then hit his second shot to tap in range ensuring a 1 up lead down the last which ultimately became a win by 2 holes. The second match also took the lead thanks to inspired form on the greens by last years captain Giles Legg, this match finished 4&3 in favour of Dorset. The third encounter saw the Dorset pair produce some fine golf running out 5&4 winners and the final match was closely fought but Hampshire prevailed on the final hole. Morning result 3-1 in favour of Dorset. So to the singles knowing Hampshire would come our firing in an attempt to stage a comeback. Dorset, led by Jon welch stretched the lead by winning the top match 2&1 which was the same result in match 2. However Hampshire were strong in the next 5 matches taking all of them to lead Dorset by 6 matches to 5 overall. The vice captain Dean Barnes was the solid anchorman we needed by winning 6&5 and ensuring a share of the spoils. Whilst I am a bit disappointed not to have won following on from the morning result I have to acknowledge the comeback from the Hampshire side showing why they are the current league champions. My thanks to Hockley Golf Club for hosting us so well all weekend, the President John Calver, Vice President Bill Kennedy and former President Colin Legg for their support and to Dan Frost, county first team performance coach for his continued commitment to the Dorset Team.
