Lyme Regis was the fixture for our second U14’s league match, with Devon as the competitor. With a relatively similar team to the one having beaten Cornwall in our first game, we felt that we had a strong team to bring in a result for the day. The weather was slightly gloomy, but the wind was very low by Lyme Regis standards.
The morning 9-Hole Foursomes commenced with fine drives from everyone. As the morning commenced, all matches proved to be extremely tight. Leadership in all matches was only by the narrowest of margin. As we approached the 9th, Devon seemed to have gained the slightest of upper-hands as we ran out of holes to swing the matches back to Dorset. A chance of a half point in the front match looked promising with the front pair managing to birdy the 9th, only to see Devon’s ball also drop for a birdy to retain their 1 shot lead. Alas the second game finished on the 8th with a 2&1 victory for Devon, and the last match went to the 9th but ending in 2 Up also in Devon’s favour. For 3 extremely close matches that could have gone either way, Dorset were looking at a rather disappointing 3-0 defficit for the morning’s effort.
The morning was, however, brightened by a wonderful hole-in-one on the 3rd by Adam Harris, no doubt his first of many in the future. Well done Adam!
After some lunch and a pep talk, the Singles ensued with Dorset demonstrating some fighting spirit. Once again, most matches were pretty close by the turn, and Dorset had to really dig-in if we were to get the necessary 5 out of 6 wins necessary for a victory. As the matches neared conclusion, again Devon seemed to gain the upper-hand. Devon closed out a victory in the front match, but then George Davis managed to bring in the first point for Dorset. As Tom Plumb in match 3 was on his way down the 18th being at all-square, we heard another point come Dorset’s way with Dominic Dunstan closing out his match 2&1. We started to hope that we could swing things in our favour, and all looked promising as Tom Plumb closed out a birdy on the 18th, but again, only to see his Devon competitor also birdy to keep the match at all-square. Devon’s victory was confirmed as Adam Harris’ and Ben Small’s matches alas concluded in Devon’s favour.
So, unfortunately a classic example of the final match score not quite reflecting the closeness of the matches played. The Dorset team all played very well, and represented their county to the best of their abilities.
We go on to our final fixture in the League against Somerset at Long Sutton on August 13th.
My thanks goes to the team, Rob Harris and parents for getting the boys to Lyme Regis. Also thanks to Lyme Regis for kindly looking after us for the day, and for the use of their great course.
