Dorset met Hampshire at Royal Winchester Golf Club on an overcast day with a bitterly cold wind, the course was in good condition and a great test for the players. The team was put together and my thanks go to Ferndown’s Nigel Knight who supported the County ensuring those selected played for the Colts. This was a young side with some of the team making their debut and the foursomes yet again proved to be are weakness as we lost the first three matches. Josh and Dominic just never got going and were down early on, Harry and Tom found Jordan and Jack in fine form. George and Ollie played well and held their own but there opponents got the better on the seventeenth to win 2&1. Fraser and Billy were three up at the half way point but the Hampshire pair fought back well and were one up going down the last but a splendid birdie from Billy and Fraser got them a well-deserved half. The afternoon singles were now an uphill task but the players fought hard, Ollie met an inform Colin Walsh losing heavily. Harry Mann had a real battle and in the main was down for most of the round but he hung on in and a great birdie down the last secured a half point. George Long was pitched against England player Jack Singh-Brar George played some great golf to take a three hole lead but as was expected Jack fought back and by the time they went up eighteen they were all square and with two great birdies at the last the game was halved, a good result for George on his Colts debut. Once Josh stopped three putting he stepped up a gear and was always in control taking the match 4&3. Dominic and Billy-Joe both had nip and tuck matches and unfortunately for them were on the wrong side of the score line. Fraser hung onto Jordan Ainley until he went on a four hole birdie run and a 5&4 win. Last out was Tom and he seemed to be in control for most of the round but was pegged back to all square on the sixteenth but a stunning shot into the par 3 seventeenth where he rolled in the putt for a birdie two to win the hole and then his playing partner Mark found the out of bounds off the last tee securing a fine win for Tom. Whilst this was a good win for Hampshire the Dorset players can take heart for they pushed their opponents all the way and played some very good golf, well played team.
