At 11.15am Came Down had given us a typically friendly welcome-thick fog! However by 12.15 it had cleared and we got underway. It stayed clear until near the end when the back nine became very difficult for half an hour before it cleared again. Now that we could see the course we found it in excellent condition. Rhys Francis was up against a very strong opponent and could not quite see him off. David Barton was playing someone who had been a pro on the tour for fourteen years so that was a very good win as was David Lock’s. Selwyn Burke was making his first start for us and had an excellent 6 & 5 win. As I have said in the past the measure of a good side is winning the close matches and John Smith, Graham Taylor and Rob Clapp were all “all square” on the eighteenth tee but won. Afterwards Shirley and her team looked after us very well. If any of you are near I can recommend her fruit cake which is absolutely delicious.
News hot off the presses. On Wednesday Hampshire beat Sussex 8 – 2 at Liphook and in the SE National Qualifying Hertfordshire won, Surrey were second and Kent only came fourth!
