Dorset took a very young side to Surrey, with three players making their South East League debuts, Tom Robson and Fraser Dawson who played in South West Week and the Colt Ollie Hayter from Ferndown.
After a practice round in the sun at Addington Palace on Saturday afternoon, we arrived Sunday morning to find the course closed due to heavy overnight rain. The Captain’s and Head Greenkeeper had a course inspection and decided that we would play the morning’s foursomes over two rounds of the drier back nine and then reassess at lunchtime. Unfortunately, after only 7 holes, torrential rain came down and flooded the greens in a matter of minutes. With all the players returning to the clubhouse, the morning foursomes were all declared a half and we waited to see if we could resume the match after lunch. With the course showing amazing drainage we got the singles underway at one o’clock, again over the back nine twice. A strong Surrey side soon showed their quality to take the lead in four of the matches. However the two Weymouth players Jon Welch and Tom Robson were giving a good account of themselves, both winning on the last after holing impressive putts for birdie. Sonny Wilkinson’s match was very close but after missing a golden opportunity on seventeen to play the last all square, he lost one down. Ollie Hayter also played well and was unlucky that the torrential rain, which returned, caused him to three putt a couple of the last four greens which led to his loss.
This was all good experience for a young team with them now knowing the standards that their games have to improve to in order to compete at this level. I am sure that they all have the capability to do so, and with application and hard work they should be able to achieve it. Our next South East League game is against Kent at Dudsbury on Sunday 22nd July, please come along to support and meet the Team if you have the time.
