Sittingborne is a parkland type golf course. When the M2 was built they lost part of the golf course so that the back nine is newer and much better than the front nine which was very quirky. We played in blustery conditions with heavy rain squalls which were cold enough to make me wish I had taken my winter mittens.
We had some good performances. Graham Taylor and Nigel Stubbs both won yet again, Alistair Raphael (Kent) had four birdies in the first eight holes and was comfortably under par but made a point of telling me how well Brian Hansford had played and Colin Short saw off Mark Singfield once again snatching victory from the jaws of defeat by winning the last three holes. I watched the match in the company of John Young, the Kent secretary, who told me that the worst handicap in the basic Kent squad of fifteen was two. Yet again we were not able to field our strongest team so beating such a strong Kent team remains a very difficult task and as you can see we lost 3 ½ - 6 ½.
