Dorset played their second Channel League match of the season against Wiltshire at the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club on Monday 10th June.

It was a sunny day but there was a cold strong wind blowing which made conditions difficult. The course was well presented with fast undulating greens.

In the morning greensomes Dorset got off to a slow start and lost the first 3 matches but a good win by Vince Joyce and Steve Pipe followed by a win for Mike Spearing and Pete Jarvis restored the balance somewhat and it was 2 - 3 to Wiltshire at lunch with all to play for.

The first 2 matches of the afternoon went against Dorset but then we had a win, and a half, and the matches in the middle and tail order were all in the balance.
After 12 holes these matches seemed to be turning in Dorset’s favour and the overall result seemed hopeful.
Unfortunately on this occasion the golfing gods were not on Dorset's side as they only managed to win 1 of the last six matches in spite of being up in a number of them well into the last 9 holes.
Four of the last matches went to the 17th or 18th hole but only Vince Joyce managed to bring home the point.
The Dorset team fought well and on this occasion the overall result does not truly represent how close the match was.
Wiltshire who are the undefeated League leaders had a very strong team out, fielding two International players. They holed more putts on tricky greens and played some exceptional up and downs from off the greens. Dorset missed a number of crucial putts at critical times which ultimately sealed their fate.

Many thanks to the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club. The course was in great condition and the teams were well looked after by the Club with a warm welcome and fine catering.

Dorset were beaten on the day by a team who rode their luck and played better golf.

The Dorset Seniors will regroup and look forward to the next match at Yeovil Golf Club versus Cornwall on June 24th where hopefully normal service will be resumed!
