On Monday 3rd July Dorset Seniors hosted Somerset Seniors in our first home match of the year in the Channel League.

It was a very blustery day with the occasional heavy shower. The course was immaculate but playing quite difficult with some challenging pin positions after having held the Remedy Oak Club Championship the day before.

We had some recently established pairings in the morning greensomes that blended very well and we went into lunch with a very healthy lead of 4.5 to 0.5.

We expected a reaction after lunch and in the singles Somerset fielded some very strong players at the top of their order. Mike Spearing led Dorset off in the afternoon and was up against an ex-English youth international who had studied in the States on a golf scholarship. Although Mike got back to only one down early in the back 9 a cold putter eventually let him down and his was our first lost point. Gary Earl gave his customary gritty performance and managed a well fought half. Todd Sothcott got back to level after a fine birdie on 17 only to find an unplayable lie with his tee shot on 18 and lost 1 down. Now the strength in depth in our playing order started to kick in and we won all the remaining 7 matches, some with wins of 4&3, 5&4 and even 6&5, giving us an encouraging 12-3 win overall.

The Team played well for each other and we now go on to face Devon who are also undefeated in the League at Sherborne Golf Club on Thursday 13th July.
