Dorset took on Hampshire at a very well presented Ferndown Golf Club on Sunday 13th May. A late withdrawl from our Vice Captain, David Cook, due to a long standing wrist injury, meant a call-up for local member Sonny Wilkinson. He was paired with Tom Peacock in the opening foursomes game which, after a close battle, went to Hampshire on the last hole. Tom Leech and Dan Bishop after a slow start fought back in their game to be level after 16 holes. A bogey on the 17th meant they had to win the last to salvage something from their match. This seemed very unlikely when Hampshire had a 2 foot putt to win, but somehow the ball lipped out and stayed above ground to earn them a half. Harry Mitchell and Giles Legg hit their opponents with six birdies on their way to a fine 4&3 victory leaving Dorset trailing 2½ - 1½ at lunch.
After a very good victory at number 1 in the previous match, Jon Welch led the team out again in the singles. However his opponent, Martin Young, made no mistakes and got Hampshire off to the start they wanted. Dorset then needed 5 wins from the last 7 matches, too tall an order as it proved. We only achieved 3 wins, another very impressive performance from Harry Mitchell, and two 3&2 results from Dan Bishop and Giles Legg.
Although the final result was a 7½ - 4½ win for Hampshire I am pleased with the overall performance of the team. The players all showed great commitment and battled well in their matches. I am looking forward to selecting the Team to represent Dorset at South West Week at the end of the County Championships in two weeks time, I feel we can have a much better week’s performance this year.
Giles Legg, Captain
