Dorset Seniors entertained Devon Seniors in our second 2023 home match in the Channel League. We had a mainly dry but occasionally overcast day.
Sherborne golf course was presented magnificently with true fast greens and we were treated to excellent hospitality in the Clubhouse.
The morning greensomes went very well for Dorset Seniors with some solid wins and we were comfortably ahead at lunchtime. Devon however, who were last year’s Senior Champions, have not lost a Seniors Channel League match in the last 2 years and are renowned for their afternoon singles results.
They came back at us hard in the afternoon singles and we were struggling in a number of matches from early on. Mike Spearing and Tony Coles had good wins and a fighting half from Paul Bodle winning the 18th hole to get back to level gave us some encouragement.
Steve Robinson making his Seniors debut had a good half in the morning matches and won a much-needed point in the afternoon. Devon won the last 3 matches with Mark Stickley losing narrowly on the 18th but Dorset had managed to hold on with an 8-7 win to remain unbeaten so far this year and be the first team to defeat Devon Seniors in the Channel League in the last 2 years.
