Weymouth Golf Club

Tuesday 22nd August

Weymouth Golf Club played host to the final 2023 league game against Cornwall. After a reasonable showing the previous week against Devon, the boys were keen to improve further and take a victory.

The foursomes got underway, and the top pairing of Alfie Wheeler and Harrison Graham got off to a flyer, winning their first 5 holes! The new partnership of Ryan Murphy and Alex Harrison also started well and were soon in control of their match. Connor Burdett and Phoenix Wilson were given their 2024 debuts and were also competing well in a very close game. Best mates Taylor Vizard and Finlay Harvey were also playing some good golf and looking in fine spirts. At the conclusion of the mornings play the result was 2.5 – 1.5 to Dorset but could have been better had our last 2 matches played the final hole better.

In the absence of number 1 player Reece Higgins, Harrison Graham got the singles under way with his trademark 3-wood stinger! The afternoon was to prove a nail biter, with nearly every game having no more than one hole in it for most of the match. A times it was almost impossible to keep track of which team was winning. After what seemed like an eternity the boys came good and ultimately Finlay Harvey going 1 up on 17, meaning he couldn’t lose, clinched the match.

Winning the final game was nothing less than the boys deserved after all the hard work they’ve put into their games this year. For 7 members of the squad, they now move out of the under 14’s team. From the raw golfers that joined 2 years, they really have come on well and I wish them all the best of luck as they continue their golfing journey. For those that remain, we go again next year!
