This was our last match of the campaign and was effectively the decider for the wooden spoon; both teams had two points prior to the match. The result was a victory for Kent by a margin of 7 – 3.

Nizels is a Golf and Country Club and makes money from visiting societies. Our first match tee-time was 11.48 on the hottest day of the year and in spite of the interval left before tee-off, our first match caught up with the field by the 6th hole. The captain’s main duty for the day was to cover the field and ensure that the team was hydrated and energised; water and bananas.

Tony Coles was in our top match and had a terrific victory over Richard Partridge; an equally fine golfer from Kent. Tony remains unbeaten since his arrival in the team and is a real asset both in terms of attitude and performance. Back in Scotland he once recorded a 59. I’ve assured him that the low 60’s is all that is required when he plays for Dorset. Dave Barton recorded a 6/5 loss but this was due to a dodgy back rather than his undoubted ability. Dave has consistently been a reliable source of points. The other matches were very close but in the end went the wrong way as far as Dorset was concerned. Apart from Tony, our other two victories were from Gordon Ross (Broadstone) and Malcolm Taylor (Parkstone). Both of them are relatively new to the team and are welcome additions. Gordon had a good performance in the Dorset Seniors Championship and was selected for the subsequent two league matches. He has a 100% record so far. Long may that continue.

Not for the first time, Dorset has finished bottom of the South-east league. We are the smallest county and have the fewest number of golf clubs. We sometimes punch above our weight as at Remedy Oak earlier this year when we recorded a fine win over Surrey. Perhaps next year when we have home advantage against Hampshire and Kent, we will be able to get all of our strongest players out and challenge for the title.
