This was our second league match of the season and the result was an excellent 6 – 4 win for the Dorset Seniors.
The weather forecast was not good but in the event there was only rain for a brief period at the beginning of the match. Dorset is the smallest county in the South-East league but sometimes punches above its weight. This was such an occasion. Surrey’s highest handicap was 3 and their average was 1.9. Our average was 3.3.
The first four matches were shared. David Barton had a fine win on the last green with a fine chip and run from 30 metres which was conceded. Trevor Robinson, who is new to the county, had a good win by a 4/3 margin. It was becoming clear, however, that we were beginning to edge ahead in the remaining matches and a famous win became a real prospect. Surrey staged a late come-back and three of the matches went to the last hole which is a short par 4 requiring an accurate short iron over the lake in front of the green. Rhys Francis and John Hayes both won the hole and Malcolm Taylor secured a half with a fine iron shot out of a fairway bunker and over the water. Tony Coles won his match 2/1 and Paul Vernam in the final match took us over the line with a convincing 4/3 victory.
This wasn’t our best side in terms of handicap but it was a group of players who wanted to play for their county and were well motivated. They deserved the win. We were supported by David Lock and the President and their attendance was very much appreciated.
The Surrey team were very impressed with the venue and asked me to pass on their thanks to those involved in its selection.
Our next match is against Hampshire at Alresford on July 25th.
