This was a convincing score-line in Hampshire’s favour but the match wasn’t as one-sided as it appears. Six of the matches went to the 17th green and two to the 18th. There were some good performances within the team.
John Hayes was playing Wayne Phillips and their better-ball score was 11 under par. In any of the other matches, John might have come away with a victory but as it was, he lost on the last green.
Mention should be made of our two golfers who were making their debut. Gordon Ross from Broadstone gained a fine 2/1 victory, holing from a bunker for a birdie on the 16th and Tim Dobbs from the Isle of Purbeck succumbed on the last green. It looked as though he might gain a half. He was 1 down playing the 18th and played a superb approach shot to 6 feet and a possible birdie. Unfortunately his opponent holed from 15 feet to close out the match. (Tim also holed)
Tony Coles was dormie 2 down but managed to win the last two holes to gain half a point and Dave Barton continued his fine record with a 2/1 win over Andy Palmer.
Hampshire are a strong team and play Sussex at home in a few weeks’ time. If they win, they will come top of the league. We have an away match v Kent at Nizels on August 23rd. We travel in hope.
