Dorset played Kent at a very well presented Knighton Heath Golf Club on Sunday the 7th of August. The morning foursomes, despite a heavy loss in the first game, were very close affairs. Tom Leech and Harry Mitchell won on the last green, Tom Robson and Andy Rideout lost 2&1 which left Dom Knight and Brad Cox out on the course all square playing the 17th. Two fine shots left Dorset 15 feet for a birdie and Kent overshot the green with their approach. After a clumsy chip 30 feet past the hole it was still Kent to play, leading us to believe we should win the hole and guarantee at least a half. Kent slammed in their long putt, Dom Knight missed his putt and then Kent fired in a 7 iron to 4 feet on the last for a birdie to win 1 up. From looking like being all square or only one point down at lunch we were playing the afternoon singles 3 – 1 down, a very difficult proposition.
Tom Robson straight from reaching the quarter finals of the English Amateur (same as last year) went out first playing against the same opponent who got the better of him last year. Tom wasn’t going to let this happen again and won his match 3&2. Despite being well down in a couple of matches, things looked fairly close through the front nine. This didn’t last and all of a sudden we were down in all the remaining games. Matt Walker, the County Champion, dug in and won the last two holes for a half and Harry Mitchell won four holes in a row to win 2 & 1. Tom Leech had a 6 foot putt to take his game down the last hole but it shaved the edge resulting in a 2 & 1 loss. This was the last action of the day in an 8.5 – 3.5 win for Kent.
With Hampshire beating Surrey convincingly on the same weekend we do need to get a result in our last match of the season away at Sussex to ensure a good final position in the South East League.
