This year’s match was played at Bognor Regis Golf Club. It’s a parkland course with water ditches on several holes. The grass was growing well and the semi-rough was very lush. The greens had recently been slashed and very few putts remained in contact with the green for the whole of their journey!
The Sussex team had arranged for a Spitfire to do a fly-past above the first tee prior to the start of the match. On reflection, it might have been more connected with the Dunkirk anniversary but nevertheless it was an impressive start to the day.
The match was won by Sussex who won six and a half matches to Dorset’s three and a half. They had a stronger team and were playing on home territory. Nevertheless there were some good performances from the Dorset team. Dave Barton had an outstanding result in the top match against Martin Galway winning by 2/1. Martin has been the West of England Seniors Champion for the last two years so this was a good win. John Smith lost narrowly in the second match but his opponent, Paul Plant had six birdies in his round. Colin Short had a fine 2/1 victory and Steve Roberts secured a half. Particularly pleasing was Hugh Lawes 2/1 victory. It was Hugh’s debut for the Senior’s team and he came back from a position of being 2 down to take the match.
Our next fixture is at Woking against Surrey and that completes our away matches in the league. We then play Hampshire at The Dorset G & CC and Kent at Ferndown.
