Our first South East League match of the season took us to Stoneham to play Hampshire. Two players were making their debuts, Joe Lovery from Yeovil and Andy Rideout from Broadstone, the new Hillamsland Trophy Champion. Honours looked like being even in the morning foursomes, but a spirited comeback from Hampshire in the first match to snatch a half meant Dorset went in at lunch 2 ½ - 1 ½ down.
David Cook really fancied playing Martin Young up top and so it proved with the performance of the day. David was 7 under par when they shook hands on the 17th green. This was just the start we needed but the fight back from the rest of the Team never really materialised, Hampshire beating our next 5 players to win the match. Even though the match was over Tom Leech and myself continued to grind with both matches going up the par 5 eighteenth hole. A par in both games was good enough for a 1 up win for myself and a good half for Tom against last year’s English Amateur Finalist.
Not the result we were looking for, but Hampshire are always very strong at home. It was pleasing that one of our new boys secured a point in the foursomes, but this shows that there is still a lot of hard work ahead for the players to enable us to compete at this level.
It’s now up to the players to push their claims to be picked for South West Week at Bristol & Clifton in June.
Giles Legg (Captain)
