Although we had home advantage, we were badly defeated by Hampshire by a margin of 8.5 to 1.5. This is their second away win of the season having defeated Sussex at Littlehampton the previous week.
Hampshire have a strong side and a standout player in Alan Mew who is currently number 7 in the order of merit and a previous world amateur champion. It fell to John Smith to do battle with him. By the 10th hole, John was 6 down. As he put it, ‘We’ve shared 7 birdies but unfortunately only one of them was mine.’ John did well to get back to a 4/3 loss.
Our only win was by Selwyn Burke who triumphed on the last green. Paul Cooper managed to secure a half in the penultimate match to complete our points total.
The next fixture is the SWCGA Seniors Championship at Parkstone on July 16/17. We have prepared well and have high hopes of qualifying for the national finals.
