This was arguably our best result of the season, although it resulted in a 6-4 loss and consigned us to bottom position in the south-east league.
This was always going to be a difficult match because Kent have a very strong team. Their average handicap was less than one and three of their team were international players. Our combined handicaps were approximately 30 shots worse than those of Kent.
Within the match, there were some fine results. John Smith had a 1up victory over Richard Partridge, an England international and one of the top ten golfers in the order of merit. They had halved the match at Chart Hills last year.
Tony Coles is new to the team this year and recorded his second win in two matches. Needing to get down in two from the edge of the 18th green to be certain of the match, Tony left nothing to chance and holed the chip.
In the mid order we suffered some heavy losses as the Kent members played well and the difference in handicaps began to show. However our last two matches played well against lower handicap players, Brian Hansford and Graham Taylor both recorded 2/1 wins.
The season’s result was worse than last year where our win over Sussex enabled us to finish in fourth place. We are the smallest county in the south-east league and unfortunately we finished in the position that our size would predict.
