We went down to Ham Manor with high hopes and probably the strongest team we have been able to field for years. Unfortunately the result was very disappointing. The weather was marvellous, warm sunshine and a little breeze. The course, although short at 6,247 yards, needed good course management as it was tree lined and in places quite narrow. Its condition was good, the greens had been watered and were receptive to good shots. They were also much faster than any in the Bournemouth area. The fairways were good although hard after the long dry spell. Our only winners told me that I must say that they all travelled in John Nash’s car. They played well but some of the other performances were disappointing. Few of our team got to grips with the pace of the greens and found them difficult to read. The meal afterwards was pleasant and convivial but that was no consolation.
