Fresh from their win over Somerset four days earlier, the Dorset team assembled at a sunny & warm DG&CC in plenty of time to prepare thoroughly, with Dan Frost, for what is traditionally a tough match against Devon.
As the foursomes settled down, matches 3 & 4 soon saw Dorset well in control and the home course pairing of Callum & George C had notched up an early 7&6 win. This was followed by a 6&4 win from George D & Sean. The top 2 matches were a lot closer and Adam & Tom needed to be on their mettle to gain a 2 up win against the experienced Danny Guy and his partner. The second match was even tighter, but Stefan & Brad maintained their concentration in a slow moving match for a narrow 1 up victory. Overall, then, the perfect start and Dorset certainly enjoyed their lunch!
On paper Dorset needed to “only” find 2½ points from the singles matches. An hour into the afternoon games it was becoming a question of “Where are these points coming from?” The top match between Tom Plumb & Danny Guy was nip & tuck but the next 3 matches saw Devon well in control. In match 8, Sean was 5 down after 8 and the other matches swung back & forth.
As the matches reached their conclusions, the top 4 had yielded only 1 point – a fine win from Tom. But then the old adage “A team is only as good as its parts” kicked in. These 8 Dorset players are a strong unit throughout, with relatively closely packed handicaps. The last 4 matches duly delivered the goods; a win by 3 &2 from George D and 3 hard fought ½ points – an excellent result from Sean who won the 18th to get his half.
Many thanks to DG&CC for their hospitality; the course was in fine condition and we were all well fed and watered. Thanks also to Devon for their contribution to a fine day’s golf.
The boys much appreciated the support from parents and the Dorset President, Bill Kennedy, and President of Juniors, Ian Clark.
