Just a short hop over the county border into Devon brought us to Honiton Golf Club for our second league match of the season. Having won our first match against Cornwall, we were optimisitic but not complacent.
The morning Foursomes commenced with most games being relatively close through the first 6, but our Lyme Regis pairing of Lyon/Seed were not quite in the groove, and quickly found themselves 4 down. Just after the turn, Baker/Carroll were gaining control of their match, while Davis/Russell were still in a close tussle, as was Dunstan/Foley.
Seed and Lyon found themselves with an early bath, and went to gather their thoughts and game for the afternoon singles. Baker and Carroll delivered the first point for Dorset, while in the Davis/Russell game the game was swinging away and the pair lost 2 down. Thankfully, Dunstan and Foley had gained control and delivered their point, making the match 2 all overall for the morning’s endevours.
A quick lunch turn-around returned the boys to the first tee for the afternoon singles. Once again, things were close after 6 holes, although the Lyme Regis boys again found themselves in an uphill battle. At the turn, we could sense that Devon were getting a grip on the game. Baker went down the 18th, and a win on that hole deliverd a half, but unfortunately Carroll, Seed, Davis and Lyon had already lost. Russell delivered a bit of good news with a win, but the match was already lost. Both teams gathered on the 17th to see the final match but Foley’s drive went right into the trees, securing a Devon win in that game as well
So, a somewhat disappointing day. The team will gather themselves for the final match against Somerset at Yeovil Golf Club on August 13th.
