Not a good day at the office. The weather forecast was for light wind and showers. Thankfully the weather stayed fine until the match was over but we could see the heavy showers (and the lightning) not far away on the mainland. The golf course was in good condition but it was very dry and the ball was running and bouncing. Judging the line on some holes was difficult and several balls were lost. We might have benefited from more practice rounds prior to the match.
John Smith was the only winner in our team. A long putt on the 18th  ensuring that he prevailed. Our other points were down to halved matches from Mike Chapman, Selwyn Burke and John Hayes. Mike’s contribution was particularly satisfying as he fought back from 2 down to secure his half.
We were up against a very strong Hampshire team. Their lead player, Alan Mew, has twice turned professional and he played some outstanding golf. He was unfortunately too strong for our lead player; Dave Barton. Hampshire have now won all of their matches with one away match to go. We have lost two of our matches and play our last match against Kent on their territory. That would be a good match to win.
