The first seniors match of 2013 is played for a trophy in memory of Jock Lawrence a former captain of both Dorset and Wiltshire. The match is played at the courses that he was a member of : Kingsdown and Yeovil. It was Kingsdowns turn this year.
The course was in good order for early season with the greens smooth and quick. A blustery wind made for interesting shot making and all players said how mutch they enjoyed the course. The result to reclaim the trophy that was in Wiltshires hands since 2010 was satisfing .
Both teams had significant team members absent because of fixture clashes and Dorset fielded one member recruited from Lyme Regis for his first match Keith Gibson.
It is difficult to make many in depth comments on individual matches when also playing as part of the team.
The top match had a good hold on the game from the start. Only a late rally from Wiltshire prevented a bigger win.
The second match saw Wiltshire go into an early lead of 3 up after 5. There were then a couple of exchanged birdies to keep this score at the turn. The back nine was just a case of play as well as you can and watch the Wiltshire pair fritter away a winning position with indifferent play around the green. A very unexpected half.
The third match was a well contested affair with Wiltshire always having the edge. I observed some very long hitting in this contest but on a breezy day this was hard to control. The match was tight with a last hole finish.
In match four I played a pair who had played together a number of times and were comfortable with each other. They played good par golf for most of the round and ran out winners by 2 up. A larger win seemed to be likely as our paths crossed in the middle of the back nine.
The last pair contained the debutant. I told him to go out and enjoy himself. He certainly did that! He chipped for a birdie on the first and holed a 12 foot put for birdie on the second. Things could only go downhill from there but both players had their  moments Keith being good early and late in the round with Mike keeping the team together through the centre of the round.

The Kingsdown Club looked after us well with catering  and match organisation. A very enjoyable first outing of the year.
