On the 4th of August Dorset played Kent in the East League at Mid Kent Golf Club. The course was presented well with excellent greens and the morning foursomes got off to a fast start for Dorset.
Match one had Harry Mitchell and a return to county golf for Matt Hector. They played solid golf and prevailed 1up. The second match involved the Weymouth pairing of Welch and Mabb to continuing our fine start with a 3&2 win. Match 3 was again good for Dorset being 3 up with 4 to play, however Kent rallied and secured a half. In the final match tom Robson was on outstanding form on the greens holing everything in sight and seeing the match went 5&4 in favour of Dorset. Morning result 3.5 to 0.5 in favour of Dorset.
So to the singles and with the fightback from Kent expected match one saw Jon Welch unfortunately lose 2&1 but the ship was steadied by Matt Hector with some excellent golf winning 3&2. in the third match David Cook struggled to find his form and lost 4&3. Match 4 was a similar story in terms of the scoreline with Tom Atkins running into a hot opponent and succumbing 6&5.
So with the scoreline at 4.5 to 3 the match was back on for Kent and we had debutant George long win his match by 2 holes, Robbie Mabb by 2&1 to secure the match win. That left Tom Robson who again played excellent golf winning 7&5 and Harry Mitchell being the solid anchorman with a 4&3 win.
The overall scoreline was an excellent result for Dorset and is the result of our continuing hard work in our training and pre-match practice. A special mention is needed for George long who won 1.5 points on his debut, another great effort for Tom Atkins who continues to grow in the first team environment. Finally Matt Hector returned to county golf showing his class with 2 points. My thanks for my Vice Captain Dean Barnes and the first team coach Dan Frost for their support this weekend, their contributions making a big difference to the result.
My thanks also go to the President John Calver, Mr Long and Mr Mitchell for driving up to support us. Finally thank you to Kent for their hospitality and for the match being played in great spirit as always.
David Cook
Dorset County Captain.
