Dorset lost to Kent 6½-5½ at Princes in a match that hinged on the morning foursomes. The weather was perfect for links golf, beautiful sun and a strong wind. It looked like Dorset were going into lunch with a lead, but we didn’t. Giles Legg and Jon Welch threw away a ‘3 up with 5 to play’ margin to only half and Tom Peacock and Dan Bishop were looking at two putts to secure a half on the last green when their opponents produced a miracle up-and-down from behind a sand dune. Dave Cook and Tom Leech secured a 2&1 win but that still left us 2½-1½ down.

It got worse for Dorset when Dan Bishop found himself well down against a strong Liam Sutton and he soon succumbed 6&5. However the tide turned and Kevin Robinson at number one overpowered his England A opponent to win on the last, Giles Legg and Dave Cook won simultaneously on the 17th and 15th greens to draw us back within one point. The match then rested with Tom Peacock and Tom Leech as Dean Barnes and Jon Welch had now both lost. Tom Peacock was 1up but lost 17 and a divot on the last fairway made him go through the back of the green. He failed to get down in two and his opponent holed a four footer to win.

That meant Kent had won the match despite Tom Leech winning on the 17th.

It was a valiant performance from the Team, but as in the Hampshire match, a one point loss that could have been so much more.
