With showers forecast we started this year’s competition in the rain, but we did not expect the heavens to open as they did when we were about two hours into the round. The greens became unplayable and play was suspended with the morning round eventually being abandoned as the rain continued to fall. After a few quick phone calls to Bridport and Came we knew the rain would stop and it did all credit to DG &CC as the greens quickly recovered and allowed us to get the Championship played over just 18 holes.
With Fraser Dawson being away the other half Billy-Joe Bugden of last year’s champions was again trying with George Long from Parkstone and were the favourites to win the title. George seed and Yorke from Lyme were again out to defend the handicap side but were also hoping to maybe sneak the scratch trophy. Local Callum ward with Parkstone’s Steffen Foley came home with 82 net 72 to take the club house lead. They were followed in by Parkstone’s George Davies and Jonathan Naylor on 80 net 73. When Adam Harris and Dominic Dunstan parred the last they thought they had a good chance of being in the prizes with a gross 79 net 71 and they then watched as the favourites could only manage a par on the last also for a 79. Billy and George knew then that they would lose on count back as three double bogies on their way home was going to see the young under 14 team members Dominic and Adam take the title on count back by some three shots. The handicap title would therefore go to Callum and Steffen.
Congratulations to the winners and all who took part in the competition we hope that more boys will start to support the event otherwise it may well fold, we will try again next year at Weymouth Golf Club on Monday 02 September let’s hope we get more support next year.
